# KindScan

KindScan is a family product safety scanner for parents. It evaluates any
consumer product and returns a separate, personalized safety result for every
person in the family simultaneously — not a single score for a generic adult.

## The core difference

Every other product scanner gives one result for one person. KindScan gives a
distinct result for each family member, with safety rules adjusted for their
specific age, trimester, and known allergies. A pregnant mom and her 3-month-old
infant can receive different verdicts on the same product — because they have
genuinely different safety thresholds. No other app in the market does this.

## How to scan

- Point the camera at a barcode in any store
- Photograph the ingredient label when there is no barcode
- Paste a product URL from Amazon, Walmart, or any retailer
- Use the free KindScan Chrome extension to check any product page without
  leaving the tab
- Share a product link from Safari with the iOS share sheet

## Verdict format

Each family member receives one of four results:

- **Safe** — no flagged concerns for this person at the ingredient level
- **Worth checking** — one or more ingredients have known concerns for this
  person's age or life stage, explained in plain language
- **Not right for them right now** — an ingredient is contra-indicated for this
  person's specific profile (allergy match, infant restriction, pregnancy
  restriction)
- **Can't confirm** — KindScan has no safety data for this ingredient and
  profile combination; uncertainty is shown explicitly, never defaulted to safe

Tapping any result shows which ingredient was flagged, why it matters for that
person, and the underlying source. Plain English throughout.

## Data sources

Safety rules are compiled from FDA guidelines, CDC recommendations, AAP
(American Academy of Pediatrics) guidance, EPA assessments, and CIR (Cosmetic
Ingredient Review) Final Reports. The evaluation is rules-based and
deterministic — not a large language model making a real-time judgment call.
Product ingredient data comes from Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central.
When KindScan lacks safety data for an ingredient, it says so rather than
passing it as safe.

## Trust model

KindScan does not accept paid brand verification. No brand pays to appear safer
than it is. Affiliate product suggestions are confined to a separate Shop tab
and never appear inside or adjacent to a safety result. KindScan does not sell
user health data to advertisers, data brokers, or insurers. These are structural
constraints built into how the product works, not marketing claims.

## Coverage

Food, baby products, cosmetics, and household products from major US retailers.
Profiles cover adults, pregnant and postpartum moms, and infants through
toddlerhood. Family profiles are free and unlimited.
